My research focuses on the immunology and genetics of diabetes. I run a research lab that utilizes cell line experiments, analysis of human samples, large data set analysis, and clinical research to develop biomarkers and new paradigms of human disease. My current projects focus on type 1 diabetes and cystic fibrosis related diabetes (CFRD).

In addition, I am a Director of Clinical and Translational Medicine in the Immune Tolerance Network, a large NIH-sponsored clinical trials consortium that conductsl immune modulating trials in type 1 diabetes, allergy, transplantation, and autoimmune diseases (https://www.immunetolerance.org). I design international, multi-center phase 1 and 2 clinical trials in type 1 diabetes and allergic disease utilizing cutting-edge immune modulation therapy. We combine data from the clinical trials data with cutting edge immunophenotyping data to better understand mechanisms of immune tolerance in humans.
