Dr. Solmaz Poorsattar Manuel is a physician-educator-researcher in the UCSF Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care. She is a graduate of the UCSF School of Medicine and the Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital Anesthesiology Residency Program. Clinically, Dr. Manuel specializes in Acute Pain, Regional Anesthesia, and Neuroanesthesia.

She is passionate about providing each patient with the safest, highest quality, and most compassionate care.

Academically, Dr. Manuel focuses on medical education, mentorship, disparities and quality improvement in perioperative care. She is an Assistant Course Director for the ABC (core cardiac, respiratory and hematology) block for first year medical students; anesthesiology clerkship site director; and career advisor for students pursuing a residency in anesthesiology. She additionally serves as an advisor in the anesthesiology residency program.

Dr. Manuel’s excellence as a medical educator has been recognized through multiple competitive awards nominated by both trainees and colleagues. Under her advising and coordination, the UCSF Anesthesia Interest Group (AIG) received national ASA recognition as most outstanding AIG. She has been awarded the UCSF Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators Excellence in Teaching Award, the UCSF School of Medicine Class of 2020 Convocation Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching by Clinical Faculty, the UCSF Ronald D. Miller Award for Excellence in Resident Mentorship, and inducted into the UCSF Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators. She was honored to have been the keynote speaker for the ASA Medical Student House of Delegates in 2020.

Dr. Manuel is involved in several collaborative research projects across departments and institutions that reflect her interests in health disparities, quality improvement, and medical education. Her current research efforts are focused on disparities in perioperive healthcare and pain management. In addition, Dr. Manuel is a dedicated champion for diversity and equity within the fields of anesthesiology and medical education. She has led efforts to reduce bias and improve the educational environment for rotators and trainees in anesthesiology, engages in research to uncover disparities in the perioperative environment, and mentors through multiple pipeline program for undergraduate and high school students from underrepresented backgrounds.
