As a Director of Clinical and Translational Medicine at the Immune Tolerance Network, Dr. Chung develops clinical trials that investigate novel approaches to induce immune tolerance in allergy and autoimmune diseases. These clinical trials utilize innovative therapeutic strategies to modulate the immune system, and have accompanying mechanistic studies to characterize the molecular, cellular, and serologic responses to therapy.

Dr. Chung's research interest is understanding the genetic and epigenetic factors that influence autoimmune disease susceptibility and its manifestations, in order to identify biologic pathways involved in disease pathogenesis and potential targets for therapeutic intervention. Past projects include genome-wide association and DNA methylation studies in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Her clinical interest is systemic vasculitis, and she directs the UCSF Vasculitis Clinic. Her research interests in vasculitis include genetic, epigenetic, and transcriptional studies of small vessel vasculitides. The UCSF Vasculitis Clinic is a member of the Vasculitis Clinical Research Consortium (VCRC), and the clinic participates in ongoing VCRC studies. Dr. Chung is also the chair of the American College of Rheumatology Vasculitis Guidelines development committee.
