Dr. Ahles received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He also graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. After completing an internship at the University of Southern California/LA County Hospital, he completed his residency training in Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego followed by a research fellowship at UCLA. He is board certified in Psychiatry.
Dr. Ahles joined the UCSF Fresno Department of Psychiatry faculty in 1983. Over the years he has served the Department in various capacities, including Director of the Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service, Director of the Emergency Psychiatry Service, Director of the Psychiatry Consultation Clinic, and eventually, Chief of Psychiatry. He is a recipient of the Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Dr. Ahles is now semi-retired. Current activities include teaching seminars to psychiatry residents and providing clinical services to students at the Fresno State Student Health Service. The Fresno State Student Health Service is also a site for elective rotations for fourth year psychiatry residents. Volunteer interests include the San Joaquin River Parkway Trust and the Flying Doctors of Mercy. Hobbies include bicycling, photography, travel and desert plants.
