He obtained his medical degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine, Columbus in 1970, and completed his residency at Stanford University Medical Center Division of Diagnostic Radiology, followed by a Chief Resident from Stanford University Medical Center Division of Diagnostic Radiology in 1974.

Dr. Filly is Co-Founder of the UCSF Fetal Treatment Center, the pioneering organization known worldwide since 1981 as the “Birthplace of Fetal Surgery.” Frequently featured in national and international news articles, Dr. Filly has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Pioneer Award of the World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology and the Fry Memorial Award of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the highest award for a North American sonologist. Dr. Filly is one of fewer than 100 worldwide fellows of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, and he is also a fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.

Dr. Filly has published more than 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and over 70 textbook chapters. He is the co-author of two books and an educational CD-ROM, Upper Abdominal Sonographic Anatomy.
