Dr. Raga Ramachandran is a surgical pathologist, a specialist in analyzing biopsies and tissue samples taken during surgery in order to help make treatment decisions. She focuses on liver and gastrointestinal diseases, and works with teams of medical students, residents, fellows and pathology assistants.

After earning a bachelor's degree and master's degree in Biological Sciences at Stanford University, Ramachandran earned a doctorate in Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Pennsylvania. She also earned her medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program. She completed residencies in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and fellowships in Surgical Pathology and Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology at UCSF.

Ramachandran participates in collaborative research in her role as the San Francisco site pathologist for the Hepatitis B Research Network, a consortium of hospitals with expertise in care for individuals with chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus. She is a member of the UCSF Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators.

Ramachandran currently chairs the Undergraduate Medical Educators Section of the Association for Academic Pathology, a nonprofit society serving as the voice of academic departments of Pathology in the United States and Canada. She is an Associate Director of the UCSF Medical Scientist Training Program and serves as the Faculty Mentoring Facilitator for UCSF Pathology.
