His expertise includes treating cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle condition that can cause the heart muscle to become weaker or thicker making it harder for the heart to pump blood. He specializes in caring for patients who may need mechanical circulatory support (devices that help the heart function) or heart transplantation.

In research, Aljohani studies factors affecting outcomes for children with end-stage heart failure who receive a heart transplant. He also explores ways to improve the quality of patient care and medical education, and enjoys mentoring medical trainees.
