Nancy Hessol is an epidemiologist whose research interests include HIV disease progression and mortality, HIV-related malignancies, and human Papillomavirus infection. She has more than 30 years of experience directing epidemiologic studies of HIV/AIDS and of health disparities.

Professor Hessol has extensive experience working on multisite research projects, analyzing complex databases, and has authored numerous publications. She is considered an international expert on HIV disease progression, with a special emphasis on HIV-related malignancies. From 2001 to 2014 and from 2016 to the present, Professor Hessol has Chaired the NIH sponsored Women’s Interagency HIV Study Cancer & Pathology Working Group. She also has a strong interest in salary equity and is the statistical analyst for the UCSF School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy Faculty Salary Equity Review (FSER), which examines equity among females and under-represented minorities. In 2016, she was selected as the School of Pharmacy senior faculty Equity Advisory to help ensure excellence, equity, and diversity for all recruited faculty at UCSF.

Nancy Hessol received a Master’s of Science in Public Health in epidemiology from UCLA’s School of Public Health in 1982 and following graduation worked on occupational, environmental, and reproductive epidemiological studies at the Hanford Nuclear facilities in Richland, Washington. In 1986 and with a strong desire to work with the growing AIDS epidemic, Ms. Hessol joined the San Francisco Department of Public Health where her research focused on HIV disease progression. Seven years later, she began employment at UCSF where she is currently a Professor in the Departments of Clinical Pharmacy and of Medicine. In 2003, she received a UCSF Champion of Diversity award for her research activities in health disparities. In March 2010, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the UCLA School of Public Health and was inducted into the UCLA School of Public Health Hall of Fame. She is a ten-time winner of the Apple for Teachers Award given by the Dean of the UCSF School of Pharmacy.

Nancy Hessol has been the course director for the School of Pharmacy Research Seminar, Study Design and Evaluation, and co-director for Foundations I. She also serves on the School of Pharmacy Curriculum Transformation Committee, the Admissions Committee, and Student Progress Committee. She is also an active member on the Academic Senate Committee for Equal Opportunity.
