She is also Director of the Program in Clinical Perinatal and Comparative Effectiveness Research in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine and Director of Preconception and Prenatal Interventions and the Transdisciplinary Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at the UCSF California Preterm Birth Initiative. Dr. Kuppermann has been conducting patient-centered outcomes research since joining the UCSF faculty in 1995, focusing on patient preferences and informed decision making among racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse women and designing and evaluating interventions to reduce disparities in adverse maternal and birth outcomes. She has a long track record in conducting NIH, AHRQ-, PCORI- and foundation-funded studies in these populations in numerous contexts, including preterm birth, prenatal genetic testing, mode of delivery, noncancerous uterine conditions, cervical cancer screening and post CIN 2+ treatment surveillance, and contraception.

Dr. Kuppermann has been the primary research mentor to numerous post-doctoral fellows, K Scholars, and recipients of other career development awards who have gone on to establish successful, independently funded research careers. She has also enjoyed mentoring many college students, medical students, nursing students, residents, clinical fellows and faculty members.
