Her primary area of focus is on the management of open tibia fractures, one of the most prevalent, complex, and socioeconomically challenging traumatic injuries in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Her long-term goal is to improve outcomes following injury by developing scalable, low-cost interventions and implementation strategies that can be adopted across resource-limited settings.

Dr. MacKechnie joined UCSF in 2016 to support the Department’s international academic organization, the Institute for Global Orthopaedics and Traumatology (IGOT). Since 2021, she has served as IGOT’s Director of Global Programs, supporting clinical research and educational programs for surgeons worldwide.
