Dr. Lowell Tong retired in 2022. His last operational roles were faculty lead for the design and creation of the UCSF Nancy Friend Pritzker Building in Dogpatch which opened in 2022 adjacent to the Mission Bay Campus, and Executive Vice Chair for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Following undergraduate studies at Stanford and medical school at the University of Virginia, he completed his psychiatry residency at UCSF. He returned to join the UCSF faculty in 1988 and served in leadership positions in the School and Department including Interim Chair of UCSF Psychiatry, as well as Chief of UCSF Mount Zion Psychiatry. He previously led the psychiatry consult service at SFVAMC, created psychiatry clinical and administrative structures of the UCSF-CPMC Brown & Toland Medical Group, and was Education Vice Chair for UCSF Psychiatry. He was an inaugural member of the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators and held the Department of Psychiatry’s Endowed Chair for Medical Student Education for two terms ending in 2014. He was the recipient of the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators Outstanding Service Award, and the Association for Academic Psychiatry Educator Award.
