Dr. Scheller’s research centers on addressing health inequities and advancing policies and nurse-led interventions that support children with complex medical needs in their transition from hospital to home. Her dissertation revealed significant disparities: children requiring long-term mechanical ventilation via tracheostomy were less likely to be discharged home if they lived in neighborhoods with fewer resources and supports. Building on this work, her ongoing research aims to promote equitable discharge practices—ensuring that families caring for children with medical complexity can successfully transition home, because home should be a choice, not a privilege.
