VandeVrede's research focuses on improving scientific understanding of neurodegenerative disorders (conditions in which nerve cells progressively deteriorate or die) and developing treatments for them.

VandeVrede earned his medical degree and a doctorate in neuroscience from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. He completed a residency in neurology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, followed by a fellowship in behavioral neurology at UCSF.
