Dr. Kangelaris’ research program centers on sepsis, with an emphasis on early identification, clinical phenotyping, and the heterogeneity of disease presentation and outcomes. Her work spans the translational spectrum, integrating electronic health record–based studies, prospective clinical cohorts, and biomarker-driven investigations, including the integration of clinical data with molecular profiling approaches. She has expertise in the development and validation of EHR-derived datasets and prospective case adjudication. She has served as a site lead for clinical operations and data management for a large observational cohort and as a co-investigator on multiple multicenter clinical trials. In addition, she has experience using clinician-facing audit log (Signal) data to study care delivery and physician workload. She serves as a site principal investigator for a multi-center study of hospitalist workload and burnout and has led institutional efforts focused on physician experience, including co-leading a UCSF-wide burnout symposium and serving on the executive leadership team of the UCSF Physicians for Engagement, Representation, and Communication (PERC) initiative.

Clinically, Dr. Kangelaris cares for hospitalized adults on the teaching and direct care services at UCSF Moffitt-Long Hospital. Her clinical work is closely aligned with her research in sepsis, particularly in the areas of early recognition and the heterogeneity of disease presentation.

She received her medical degree and completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan, followed by fellowship training and a Master of Advanced Study in Clinical Research at the University of California, San Francisco.
