Dr. Hwang works collaboratively with a team of specialists at UCSF and MarinHealth to optimize outcomes from conservative and non-operative interventions. For those who require surgery, he embraces minimally invasive techniques that allow patients to experience less pain and recover more rapidly.
Dr. Hwang's research focuses on optimizing spinal surgery outcomes and providing equitable surgical care to diverse populations. He is interested in incorporating new technologies into surgical care, with recent projects on decreasing neck pain after posterior cervical spinal surgery and using neural networks (a type of artificial intelligence) to automate fracture detection.
Before coming to Northern California, Dr. Hwang was a spine surgeon and faculty member at Massachusetts General Hospital and an instructor at Harvard Medical School. He earned his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine, then completed residency training in orthopedic surgery at UCSF followed by a fellowship in spine surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, as well as running in the hills of San Francisco or Marin County.
Dr. Hwang will see patients at MarinHealth Orthopedic Care | A UCSF Health Clinic in San Rafael in Marin County. For more information or to make an appointment, please call 415-925-8963.
