Dr. Katherine Van Loon is a Professor of Medicine with clinical expertise in the management of gastrointestinal cancers. She has a particular interest in colorectal and anal cancers.

As Director of the Global Cancer Program at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Van Loon oversees UCSF’s portfolio of research and capacity-building projects in low and middle-income countries as well as educational programs for training in global oncology. Her research interest focuses on the epidemiology of gastrointestinal cancers both in the United States and globally, with the aim to improve clinical outcomes and reduce disparities in vulnerable populations.

Dr. Van Loon earned her master's degree in public health from the Yale School of Public Health before attending the Medical College of Georgia. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. She came to UCSF for a fellowship in oncology in 2009 and subsequently joined the faculty at UCSF in 2012.

Dr. Van Loon is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), and the African Esophageal Cancer Consortium (AfrECC). She has been the recipient of numerous awards in mentorship.
