He completed his internship and otolaryngology residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, followed by a Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery fellowship at Augusta University (previously Medical College of Georgia) in Augusta, Georgia.
At UCSF, Dr. Gurrola’s clinical practice focuses on patients with a wide variety of rhinologic and anterior skull base disease processes. Dr. Gurrola has specific focuses on the etiology of chronic sinusitis and novel treatments and an interest in olfactory disorders and treatments. He and his colleagues have published recent work on COVID-19-related chemosensory (smell and taste) dysfunction and recovery. He works closely with other disciplines, including Neurosurgery, Allergy-Immunology and Pulmonology, to provide comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care for a wide variety of patients.
He has been honored as a UCSF Watson Scholar, enabling his expanding clinical research evaluation of the impact of various disease processes and skull base disorders on olfaction.
He participated in the UCSF Teaching Scholars program in 2018-2019. His educational interests involve the development and implementation of novel educational approaches in rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery and exploring the potential implementation of next generation technology in anatomic education.
Dr. Gurrola serves as the UCSF Otolaryngology Department’s Director of Diversity. He serves as a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion champion and has recently participated in the inaugural UCSF Institute for Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism Leadership (IDEAL) Academy. He has a long history of mentorship and effective advocacy for UIM medical students and residents throughout his career.
Dr. Gurrola is board-certified and serves as a guest examiner for the American Board of Otolaryngology. He is an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the American Rhinologic Society and the North American Skull Base Society and serves on several committees within these organizations.
