My research program seeks to advance understanding of risk factors for heart disease and stroke in order to improve prevention, risk stratification, and treatment of these disorders. These investigations leverage molecular epidemiology and cardiovascular imaging to identify biochemical markers and endophenotypes involved in the initiation, development and progression of cardiovascular diseases.

My work involves various NIH-funded longitudinal cohort studies, including the Cardiovascular Health Study, the Hispanic Community Heath Study / Study of Latinos, the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, and the MACS-WIHS Combined Cohort Study. These efforts span glucose and lipid dysregulation, liver disease, sex hormones, bone and mineral metabolism, and inflammation, and their relationship with cardiovascular disorders, particularly in the context of aging, HIV, and socially disadvantaged groups. A major thrust is the application of next-generation sequencing technologies, omics, and advances in non-invasive imaging to make inroads into pathophysiology and potential therapeutics.
