During the fellowship at UCSF, Joanne has integrated her expertise in communication and media with tobacco control. Her current research focuses on three fields: Mass media representation of tobacco products, especially e-cigarettes, social media data analysis on health-related issues, and vaping and smoking cessation interventions delivered via social media. A paper led by Joanne on media representation of e-cigarettes in China won Top Paper Award in the Health Communication Division at the 71st annual conference of International Communication Association (ICA). Her application for the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship (F32) got a perfect review score (impact score: 10, percentile: 1). Joanne is now working on developing a peer mentoring system applicable to social media interventions for teen vaping cessation. This system has the potential to address the challenge of reduced engagement over time in social media interventions, and further increase the efficacy of these interventions.
