He is one of two craniofacial surgeons at UCSF and the sole craniofacial surgeon providing care of facial trauma and craniofacial reconstruction at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Additionally, Dr. Pomerantz is one of four surgeons at UCSF performing facial gender affirmation surgery, and the only surgeon to perform these procedures at ZSFGH, where he led and performed the first series of facial gender affirmation operations for an underserved population at a county hospital in the United States. He also is Co-Chair of the Department of Surgery Research Committee at UCSF, overseeing the department research activities focused on student and resident scholarly work and Director of Pomerantz Laboratory. The Pomerantz Laboratory studies basic and translational aspects of tissue regeneration. Their research program is closely related to regenerative medicine. With foundations in muscle and cancer biology, they are investigating regenerative mechanisms including stem cell function and de-differentiation. By employing model organisms such as zebrafish and mouse and extending discoveries to human cells and tissues, they aim to gain fundamental insight that can be translated into clinical advances, most notably solving the structural and reconstructive problems of the limbs, face, and head.
