Dr. Smith is Director of the UCSF Male Reproductive Health practice dedicated to providing outstanding reproductive clinical care, conducting cutting edge research, and improving access to reproductive care. His research program is dedicated to helping men and boys with cancer become fathers after surviving cancer treatment.

He and his partners conduct basic science investigations of sperm physiology, sperm stem cells, and semen physiology; translational research focused on fertility restoration by means of testicular and stem cell transplantation; and clinical research into reproductive effects of targeted cancer therapies such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors and MTOR inhibitors., Clinically, Dr. Smith treats men with fertility problems, need for fertility preservation, erectile dysfunction, orchalgia, and hypogonadism in the Center for Reproductive Health. Dr. Smith specializes in the use of minimally invasive vasectomy, microsurgical vasovasostomy, vasoepididymostomy, sperm retrieval techniques, spermatic cord denervation, and varicocelectomy.
