In my research, I work to understand how health systems can improve implementation to meet users’ needs and preferences. I apply my expertise as an epidemiologist towards this goal in multiple ways, including:

  • Understanding user preferences for primary care services. Studies include discrete choice experiments on hypertension services in Karnataka, India and on reproductive health needs in Mississippi, USA.
  • Characterizing and improving program implementation within primary care systems. Studies include development and testing of measures of organizational readiness to provide HIV prevention and treatment programs in rural South Africa and a time-motion assessment within clinics in Lima, Peru.
  • Quantifying patient-reported experience, outcomes, and priorities for health services. Studies include assessments of self-reported measures of mistreatment during childbirth, cross-national surveys on population priorities for health service delivery in multiple countries in Latin America, and a pilot study of electronic patient-reported outcome (PRO) reporting for women receiving breast cancer treatment in Mexico City.

I also draw on my experience in study design, quantitative analyses, and complex measurement challenges to collaborate on projects both domestically and internationally. I have worked with the World Bank and the World Health Organization on health system quality and effective coverage measurement. I am interested in extending my research to include implementation trials of health service innovations.
