Elizabeth Rose Mayeda, PhD
Professor
Epidemiology & Biostatistics
School of Medicine
I am an assistant professor of epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. I also hold an affiliate faculty appointment with the UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The substantive focus of my research is on identifying the origins and lifecourse mechanisms of racial and ethnic disparities in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Evidence on when inequalities relevant to dementia begin to emerge and the mechanisms that culminate in dementia, often decades later, will help identify effective strategies to reduce disparities. Social and structural inequalities likely play a key role, and increasing evidence implicates cardiovascular risk factors as more proximal mechanisms. To address these research questions rigorously, my work emphasizes methods to strengthen causal inference, especially tools to quantify and remediate selection bias. My long-term research goals are to: (1) identify effective strategies to prevent dementia and reduce racial and ethnic disparities in dementia and (2) develop research tools to strengthen causal inference in dementia research and lifecourse epidemiology.
