I retired from UCSF on July 1, 2018. I am now a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. I retired on July 1, 2018 and am now Professor Emeritus of Family and Community Medicine. My interest in patient-centered health care spans over 20 years and includes research in several areas, including patient trust, patient preferences, shared decision making, cultural competency, and health coaching. I have been a PI or co-PI for over a dozen studies, both quantitative and qualitative, using observational and clinical trial designs. My recent work has been in the evaluation of models of health coaching for under-served patients with chronic disease. I am the PI of a randomized controlled trial of health coaching for low-income, vulnerable patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
