His patient care activities are centered in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, where he performs diagnostic and interventional procedures on infants, children, and adults with congenital heart disease, and in the Pediatric Heart Center, where he serves as the cardiology attending in the Cardiac ICU and Transitional Care Unit on a regular basis, and has a half-day clinic in general cardiology. He is an expert in the adaptations of the newborn cardiovascular system to birth and the alterations that occur with congenital heart disease, which has been the primary area of his research. He co-authored a book on this topic, titled Neonatal Cardiology, and gives lectures throughout the Americas and Europe on the heart and circulation of the fetus and child. He has also worked for many years in the Academic Senate of the University, and was the Chair of the UCSF division from 2017 to 2019. The Academic Senate is an independent liaison body that serves to represent faculty concerns and interests to both campus administration and the UC Office of the President, and shares governance of certain aspects of the University.
