Dr. Sears completed an internal medicine residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and an infectious diseases fellowship at UCSF. Following fellowship, he joined the Division of HIV Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where he served as the Associate Program Director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship.

Dr. Sears now provides primary care for people with HIV at the 360 Positive Care Center at UCSF, infectious diseases consultations at UCSF, and inpatient care on the internal medicine wards at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.

Dr. Sears is the Director of Healthcare Quality for Amend at UCSF, where he focuses on evaluations of healthcare quality in California state prisons, with the aim of improving healthcare outcomes for residents of correctional facilities. Dr. Sears also runs educational programs and leads quality improvement efforts in the 360 Positive Care Center at UCSF and serves as the Director of 4th Year Medical Student Electives for the Department of Medicine. Additionally, he supports the development of HIV medical education curricula in partnership with health professions schools across sub-Saharan Africa and Jamaica.
