Dr. Chavira received her undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). She has a Master of Public Health degree in Community Health Sciences from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. She attended medical school at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine Charles R. Drew University Program.

She did her residency training in Psychiatry at the University of Southern California (USC) where she was the Chief Resident for the Inpatient Psychiatry Service. Following residency, she completed a fellowship training in Forensic Psychiatry at the USC Institute of Psychiatry, Law, and Behavioral Science. Dr. Chavira is board certified in general psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. Prior to joining UCSF Fresno, she was on the faculty for the USC Keck School of Medicine. Before transitioning to outpatient psychiatry, she served as an inpatient attending psychiatrist and Associate Medical Director for the Adult Inpatient Psychiatry Service at Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center. Dr. Chavira taught and supervised USC psychiatry residents and medical students and was the recipient of multiple teaching awards. She joined the faculty at UCSF Fresno in 2021 as a Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry. She is a staff psychiatrist and clinical supervisor for UCSF Fresno psychiatry residents at the Fresno County Metro Department of Behavioral Health Clinic. Dr. Chavira is also the Assistant Program Director for the UCSF Fresno Psychiatry Residency Program and Associate Medical Director of Forensic Psychiatry Services for Fresno County Department of Behavioral Health. Dr. Chavira is a Central California native, and since 2015, she has been awarding college scholarships to graduating high school seniors at her alma mater, Dinuba High School.
