Critical care cardiologists have expertise in the management of patients with severe, complex heart disease and dysfunction of other organ systems that occurs as a results of or simultaneously with heart disease. Critical care cardiologists work in teams with other specialists in cardiology and other medical and surgical specialties to ensure that critically ill patients receive the best possible care for all of their medical problems. Critical care cardiologists also work closely with advanced heart failure cardiologists and cardiac surgeons to manage patients who require temporary or permanent heart assist devices and heart transplants. In addition, Dr. Barnett care for patients with pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure.

RESEARCH INTERESTS: Dr. Barnett studies disease processes that occur in patients in the cardiac intensive care unit such as cardiogenic shock, with the hope of developing better ways to organize care and how multidisciplinary teams function to optimally manage complex cardiac disease and improve patient outcomes. He is also interested in education and how to best train cardiologists in critical care medicine. Dr. Barnett is also interested in finding novel treatments for patients with pulmonary hypertension.
