Dr. Caroline H. Shiboski cares for adult and pediatric patients with oral mucosal diseases and other oral disorders.

These include inflammatory conditions (lichen planus, pemphigus, pemphigoid), infectious diseases (such as candidiasis and herpes virus infections), certain oral pain conditions (such as burning mouth syndrome) and the oral complications of graft-versus-host disease, which may develop following a stem cell transplant. She is also involved with the initial diagnosis of oral cancer and precancerous conditions, and works closely with the head and neck surgery team for timely referral and treatment.

Shiboski earned her doctor of dental surgery degree from Paris Descartes University in France. She completed a residency in oral medicine at UCSF. She earned a master of public health degree in epidemiology and a doctorate in epidemiology at the University of California, Berkeley.

Shiboski's research focuses on the possible oral manifestations of immune system dysfunction, in particular Sjögren's disease (SjD), and she has been funded through NIH grants and contracts consistently since 1994. Dr Shiboski was part of the team that established the NIDCR-funded Sjögren’s International Collaborative Clinical Alliance (SICCA) in 2003, and has served as its Principal Investigator (PI) since 2010 as SICCA continues to yield important research aimed at identifying therapeutic targets for SjD. She also led a team of international experts in the development and validation of the current classification criteria for SjD approved by the American College of Rheumatology and the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology in 2016. Dr Shiboski is the current contact PI for the Sjögren’s Team for Accelerating Medicines Partnership that is one of four disease teams participating in the Accelerating Medicines Partnership® Autoimmune and Immune-Mediated Diseases (AMP®AIM) Program.

Shiboski is a member of the American Association for Dental Research, International Association for Dental Research, American Dental Association, California Dental Association, American Academy of Oral Medicine, San Francisco Dental Society and American College of Rheumatology.
