Beth Harleman is UCSF Professor of Medicine and Vice Chief of Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. As Vice Chief of Medicine at ZSFG, Beth runs the Inpatient Medical Service, develops programs to support faculty engagement and leadership, and promotes equity, quality and safety in patient care.

She practices clinically on both the inpatient and ambulatory services and holds a joint appointment in the Department of OB/Gyn/Reproductive Sciences in recognition of 20 years providing consultation for pregnant women with medical illness.

A clinician-educator, Beth has extensive experience developing and delivering curricula to a wide range of learners. Beth co-created and ran the highly rated UCSF School of Medicine capstone course, Coda, which served as a model for medical schools across the country. As Associate Program Director for the UCSF Internal Medicine Residency Program, Beth oversaw all formal curricula and was responsible for program evaluation and improvement. As Associate Chair for Faculty Experience for the DOM, Beth planned and led departmental retreats and strategic planning in areas such as transforming use of technology, promoting diversity and equity, faculty recruitment and retention, and bringing multiple clinical sites closer together. She conceived and led a number of highly regarded leadership training programs, as well as orientation programs for new faculty.

Beth is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz and the UCSF School of Medicine. She was a resident and chief resident at UCSF. She is the recipient of numerous teaching awards and is a member of UCSF’s Academy of Medical Educators. Beth is a proud mother of three, and a passionate advocate for women in medicine.
