in engineering and applied science with a specialty in electrical engineering at Yale. He then completed an M.D. and Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins Medical School with his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering with research in systems physiology and autonomic control of the vasculature. He then moved to the University of California, San Francisco where he completed an internship in internal medicine, a residency in anesthesiology, and a cardiac anesthesiology fellowship. His research at UCSF has included numerous projects in animals and patients including device development for monitoring, surgical therapy of heart failure, and the off pump CABG, as well as drug development and testing. He is best known for his work developing medications for the prevention of perioperative cardiac morbidity and mortality. He was one of the developers of perioperative beta blockade and has assisted more than 200 hospitals set up perioperative beta blocker programs. His present work includes development medications to reduce perioperative cardiac risk, development of the ECOM cardiac output monitor, developing a non-invasive respiratory monitor, a device to provide electronic sedation, testing and development of surgical therapies for heart failure, implementation of perioperative beta blockade, developing therapies to prevent perioperative and ICU related PTSD, and developing computer systems to improve systems based medicine. He lectures extensively on cardiac risk reduction and has produced an on-line course on cardiac risk reduction. intelligence.
