Anthony J. Baker, Ph.D. has a longstanding interest in the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate cardiac muscle contraction in health and disease. We study cardiac function in experimental preparations that span a range of spatial scales and complexity, including single cells, isolated cardiac muscle and intact hearts in-vivo. A major goal is to investigate new therapies to treat heart failure.

We are studying heart failure involving the right ventricle (RV) of the heart. Currently, there is no effective pharmacologic treatment for RV failure. Our recent studies show that a class of adrenergic drugs can reverse RV failure. We are investigating how these drugs work, and if they might be used to treat RV failure.
