Andrew Burghardt is an Imaging Scientist in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at University of California, San Francisco where he serves as the Technical Director of the Quantitative Micro-Imaging Facility (QMIF). His area of expertise is high-resolution imaging computational analysis of musculoskeletal tissues.

Osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and bone acquisition and development are the principle focus application areas for his research. As a Principal Investigator he has been awarded two R01s from NIH related to the standardization of HR-pQCT and the development of 3D statistical mapping techniques for population-based analyses of bone quality. He is a co-investigator on a number of significant NIH-funded multicenter skeletal health projects, including Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS), and the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC). He was a member of the joint International Osteoporosis Foundation, ASBMR, and ECTS working group that produced guidelines for the use of HR-pQCT in skeletal health studies. Recently his research interests have expanded to include the development of standardized methods for using HR-pQCT in pediatric populations through collaborations with Stanford University. At UCSF he is developing a multidisciplinary program to study skeletal development in transgender youth. Finally, he is a founding member of the SPECTRA group (Study GrouP for XTrEme-CT in RA) that aims to develop standard methods to detect and quantify early signs of progression and treatment response in rheumatoid arthritis using HR-pQCT.
