I am a professor in the Department of Pediatrics who is passionate about leveraging the expertise we have at UCSF and in our community to make child health and wellness a reality for all children the Bay Area. To achieve this vision, I helped to establish the cross-bay UCSF Center for Child and Community Health.

I currently serve as the Department's Director of Health Equity and Community Engagement and am a senior advisor for the UCLA-UCSF ACEs Aware Family Resilience Network (UCAAN).

I believe our unique health professions-focused campus has an opportunity to explicitly develop leaders who will transform health throughout the life-course of individuals and communities. I had the incredible opportunity to be the Founding Director of the UCSF Pediatric Leadership for the Underserved (PLUS) residency program (2004-15) and served as the Associate Director of Curriculum for the UCSF Pathways to Health and Society (2011-15). From 2020-22 I was the co-Director of the CA ACEs Learning and Quality Improvement Collaborative.

Accordingly, my interests are in community health, centering lived experience in our academic mission, collaborative leadership, and leadership development, particularly to improve the health of populations most burdened with inequities.

I am a member of the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators (AME) and hold an Endowed Chair in Pediatric Education. I served as the Communication and Advocacy Champion until 2015. I continue to serve as an editor for the Center for Faculty Educators e-newsletter.

From 2012-15, I served as a First Five Commissioner for San Francisco. I also serve as a consultant with the American Academy of Pediatrics in areas of community pediatrics and advocacy competencies for trainees. From 2015-18, I joined the Board of the 3rd Street Youth Center and Clinic.

Some of the specific topics I have facilitated include: developing and articulating vision, negotiation, conflict management, empathic listening, time management, emotional intelligence, and personal leadership inventories. I am certified practitioner of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Clinically, I am grateful to see patients and teach medical students and residents at the County hospital, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.
