Ali B. Abbasi, MD MPhil MSci is currently a general surgery resident with the UCSF Department of Surgery. He previously attended the University of Cambridge, where he obtained a BA/MSci in Physics and an MPhil in Computational Biology. At Cambridge, he rowed on the varsity crew team that won the 2016 Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race.

He completed medical school at the University of Chicago where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society.

While in medical school, Dr. Abbasi served as an advisor to Director Nirav Shah at the Illinois Department of Public Health, where he focused on data-informed policies in response to the opioid overdose epidemic and childhood lead poisoning. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Abbasi led modeling and resource planning efforts at the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.

Currently, Dr. Abbasi is a T32 Fellow in Surgical Oncology, serving as a senior policy advisor in the office of commissioner Robert Califf MD, at the US Food and Drug Administration. In this role, Dr. Abbasi is focused on efforts to improve evidence generation and streamline clinical trials in the US health care system.
